Strengthening U.S. Competitiveness In the Global EconomyTechNet is committed to continued U.S. competitiveness and economic growth. Public policies and private sector initiatives that spur our nation's innovation-driven global competitiveness are our top priority. Technological advances, the convergence of computing, communications and content and cross-disciplinary innovations are creating new technologies and whole new industries. The Innovation Economy is not an American phenomenon. It is a global transformation that is taking root in China, India, Russia and other nations. These nations are investing in emerging technologies to seize a competitive advantage in the industries and markets of the future. Other nations are rapidly catching up to – and even surpassing – the United States in areas of traditional American preeminence. The impact of innovation, technology and new ideas on economic growth, job creation, prosperity and quality of life is well understood yet it is our global competitors who are investing in education, encouraging entrepreneurship through expanded use of employee stock options, making next generation infrastructure a priority and implementing other policies designed to spur innovation. In this era of increased global opportunities and challenges, we need to redouble our commitment to public policies and private sector initiatives that make the U.S. the most competitive and innovative country in the world, and that create jobs and opportunity for Americans. Recognizing the critical importance of innovation to our continued global competitiveness, TechNet convened the first TechNet Innovation Summit in 2004. This annual gathering of many of the nation's premier innovators and high technology leaders focuses on global competitiveness through innovation. Each year, the TechNet Innovation Summit will explore the critical link between innovation and economic growth, highlight cutting-edge technologies and emerging industries, and identify the key public policies that will determine whether and how the United States maintains its global edge. Moderated by renowned journalist Charlie Rose, this compelling dialogue has been broadcast on the PBS program Charlie Rose. In 2005, the TechNet Innovation Summit examined the future of the Internet, how innovation is changing American lives, and how our nation can compete in today's global economy. Participants included the founders and CEOs of some of America's leading Internet, e-commerce and information technology companies. Throughout 2004, TechNet held a series of high-level events across the country in which the nation's leading innovators, policymakers, academics and others explored the state of U.S. innovation. The TechNet Innovation Initiative identified barriers to our nation's continued leadership in innovation and technology and highlighted key drivers of our nation's continued global competitiveness. Each year, the ideas and initiatives that are generated from the TechNet Innovation Summit influence the development of TechNet's innovation and competitiveness policy agenda.
