Joanie Deutsch, Executive Director, Washington and the Northwest
Joanie is a strategic and creative public affairs professional with a background in government relations, public policy, media relations, and crisis communications.
Joanie most recently served as the director of government affairs for the Washington Retail Association. She was responsible for developing all legislative policy papers, overseeing necessary research to develop positions, and working with appropriate members and legislative contacts as needed. Joanie worked with members of the association’s Government Affairs Committee to develop positions, analyze legislation and rules, and issue updates. She managed all bill tracking and state lobbying efforts, as well as tracked and worked on local government issues. Joanie also produced the annual Law Review and Legislative Voting Record for the association.
Prior to joining the Washington Retail Association, she spent four years at Strategies 360, a Washington State based firm that provides outstanding services in government relations and lobbying, strategic communications, public policy, social media and research. The firm has offices in 10 Western states and Washington, D.C.
At Strategies 360, Joanie used her substantial legislative policy and advocacy experience as the Public Affairs Director. Heading up the firm’s office in Olympia, she worked with clients to effectively deliver their messages to legislators, regulators, and other decision makers, as well as tracking and monitoring the complex legislative process. Joanie worked with clients that ranged from solar manufacturers, to beef processors, to municipalities and utilities to advance their interests at the State Capitol.
Before joining Strategies 360, Joanie served in the Office of the Secretary of State on the communications team and later as a policy analyst in the Elections Division. She worked with reporters, legislators, and decision makers on topics ranging from incorporation filings and public records to election results and litigation. Joanie worked with key decision makers, media, and the public during Washington’s 2004 gubernatorial race, one of the closest races in the nation’s history. She also helped launch the first social media program in Washington State government.
In her spare time, Joanie enjoys all things outdoors with her daughter and husband, including camping, hiking, biking, kayaking, and taking in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. She also enjoys giving back to her state and community as an active volunteer for several organizations and as a member of Olympia Kiwanis.
Joanie is a native of the Tri-Cities and a graduate of Saint Martin’s University in Lacey, where she majored in Political Science.
