Washington, D.C. – TechNet, the bipartisan policy and political network of CEO’s that promotes the growth of the innovation economy, today named John Doherty as the new vice president of state policy & politics and general counsel.

“John has an excellent track record managing multi-state policy portfolios, working with state legislators,  and providing strategic advice to both policy makers and industry leaders.  We are delighted to welcome him to the TechNet team,” said Alix Burns, acting president and CEO of TechNet.

“John brings a keen understanding of the role of innovation to our country’s economy and a proven history of setting the policy agenda to support it.  His experience in the California legislature as well as his work as a vice president of state government affairs at Fortune 25 company, UnitedHealth Group, will be a great asset to TechNet and its member companies,” said John Doerr, TechNet executive council member and partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

As vice president of state government affairs for UnitedHealth Group, John was responsible for implementing legislative, political, policy and procurement strategy for the Fortune 25 Company.

Prior, Doherty gained extensive legislative experience with the California State Assembly, where he most recently served as chief of staff for Majority Leader Alberto Torrico and district director for Assembly Member Sally Lieber.

John has a strong presence in Sacramento and has developed policy and managed major negotiations and legislative initiatives that helped drive policy across the western region of the United States.  TechNet understands the importance of California’s legislative initiatives both in-state and as a leading example to other legislators and the federal government.
