TechNet California Honors Senator Alex Padilla With Annual Tech Champions Award

Palo Alto, California – TechNet, the leading bipartisan policy and political network of CEOs that promotes the innovation economy, today honors California State Senator Alex Padilla with the organization’s annual Tech Champion award for California. Senator Padilla has represented the San Fernando Valley in the California Senate since 2006 and has established himself as one of the state’s most thoughtful leaders on technology policy.

The Tech Champion award is given by TechNet California annually to a California legislator or public official who has proven to be exceptionally effective in advocating for a pro-innovation policy agenda. The individual has taken initiative to boost investments in education, research and create an environment conducive to entrepreneurship and job creation. Senator Padilla is scheduled to receive the award today, Wednesday, December 12th, 2012, at TechNet’s Annual Policy Conference and Tech Academy.

Since December 2008, Senator Padilla has served as Chair of the Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee. Senator Padilla also serves on the Banking and Financial Institutions Committee; the Natural Resources and Water Committee; the Labor and Industrial Relations Committee; the Public Employment and Retirement Committee; and the Governmental Organization Committee. He also Chairs the Select Committee on Obesity & Diabetes, the Select Committee on College and University Admissions and Outreach and the Select Committee on English Learners in California.

Senator Padilla has carried legislation on a number of fronts that have been top priorities to TechNet. In particular, SB 1161 established a pro-innovation regulatory climate for Voice-over-IP. Furthermore, he established and expanded the California Advanced Services Fund to expand broadband access, expanded access to the Teleconnect Fund and established the California Virtual Campus, established standards for autonomous self-driving vehicles, developed and strengthened the Smart Grid in California and developed privacy policies that protected consumers while advancing innovation, and helped advanced technology and clean energy companies expand in California by reducing sales tax on equipment used for manufacturing.
