Key responsibilities:
TechNet is seeking a Federal Policy Communications Director to support our federal policy team and act as the primary media contact for our D.C.-based advocacy. The ideal candidate will have on-the-record experience, demonstrated success cultivating reporter relationships, and a record of developing impactful communications materials for government, non-profits, or the technology sector. The position is based in Washington, D.C., and will report to TechNet’s SVP of Communications.
Spokesperson and Media Contact: Serve as the primary media contact and spokesperson for Washington, D.C., including congressional and agency reporters, policy trade publications, and daily tip sheets.
Strategic Communications: Develop and execute communications strategies to enhance the visibility of TechNet’s federal policy team, including identifying high-impact events, panels, and media opportunities.
Media Relationships: Build, cultivate, and maintain strong relationships with Washington-based reporters, policy trades, and tip sheets to shape coverage and advance TechNet’s policy priorities.
Communications Materials: Lead development of compelling federal policy communications, including messaging documents, talking points, press briefings, website and social media content, and one-pagers for media engagement.
Qualifications:
- Proven success building and maintaining relationships with Washington-based reporters covering Congress, the White House, federal agencies, and national policy debates.
- Strong track record of developing high-impact communications materials, including press statements, op-eds, messaging frameworks, policy explainers, media briefings, and executive talking points.
- Experience working in or alongside federal policymaking environments, such as Capitol Hill, federal agencies, the White House, trade associations, advocacy organizations, or the technology sector.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to translate complex federal policy issues into clear, persuasive, and media-ready language.
- Strong strategic planning and analytical skills, with the ability to align communications strategy with federal advocacy priorities and legislative timelines.
- Ability to quickly learn and synthesize a broad portfolio of federal policy issues and respond effectively in a fast-moving political and media environment.
- A collaborative, service-oriented approach with experience supporting policy teams, executives, and member companies on communications strategy and media engagement.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced setting — initiating projects, managing competing priorities, and driving results while coordinating closely with internal teams.
Salary range and benefits
The salary range for the position is $140,000 to $150,000 per year, depending on experience. This position is also eligible for TechNet’s benefits package, which includes the following for this role:
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance, and a flexible spending plan. TechNet pays 100% of employees’ health care premiums, less a small employee contribution of $10 per month.
