Washington, D.C. – TechNet, the national, bipartisan network of innovation economy CEOs and senior executives, submitted comments on the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Proposed Rule on the Use of Consumer Reviews and Testimonials. The following statement can be attributed to TechNet President and CEO Linda Moore:

“Authentic and trustworthy reviews help consumers make informed buying decisions, draw attention to small businesses and sellers, and provide a forum for customers to share their thoughts and experiences. However, deceptive or fake reviews threaten the safety of consumers, hurt online sellers, and disrupt online marketplaces, and must be stopped.

“The technology industry has deployed significant measures and resources to end the spread of faulty reviews. Unfortunately, bad actors continue to find ways to exploit these tools to mislead consumers and make a profit.

“The FTC’s proposed rule to prevent fake reviews is an important step forward. However, several provisions in the rule pose significant First Amendment challenges, conflict with Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, and need further clarification. We look forward to working with the FTC on our shared goal of improving confidence in reviews and testimonials.”
