Google is helping preserve the genetic information of endangered species with AI
More than one million species face the risk of extinction, and without accurately capturing their genetic data, we risk losing them forever — destabilizing entire ecosystems. To support the Vertebrate Genomes Project and the Earth BioGenome Project in their mission to sequence all known species on Earth, Google has provided funding, technical support, and advanced AI tools to help preserve the genetic code of 13 endangered species across multiple animal classes. Sequencing the first human genome took 13 years and $3 billion. Today, AI enables scientists to sequence humans, animals, and plants in a matter of days — at a fraction of the cost and with remarkable accuracy. Google-developed tools such as DeepPolisher, DeepVariant, and DeepConsensus are accelerating this work and helping researchers tackle urgent, real-world biodiversity challenges.
