AB 1018 will Harm Small Businesses, Deter Innovation and Undercut California’s Economy
Washington, D.C. – TechNet, the national, bipartisan network of tech CEOs and senior executives, today announced that it is launching an ad campaign to educate policymakers about the impact of CA AB 1018, a bill that purports to address discrimination in automated decision systems (ADS). The ads show that while the bill claims to combat discrimination, it misses the mark — hurting California businesses and the state’s economy instead.
“AB 1018 fails to meet its stated goal and instead casts an overly broad net that impacts virtually every industry in California — from small businesses to the largest companies,” said Robert Boykin, TechNet’s Executive Director for California and the Southwest. “This overreach risks devastating small businesses, stifling beneficial innovations, and harming California’s economy.”
California businesses have voiced strong opposition to the bill. An August 13 letter from a statewide business coalition can be read here.
