WASHINGTON, D.C. — TechNet, the national, bipartisan network of CEOs and senior executives, issued the following statement after President Joe Biden signed an executive order establishing new regulations for transatlantic data transfers. The following can be attributed to TechNet President and CEO Linda Moore:

“Every day, cross-border data flows prove vital to the collective economic success of the United States and Europe. This U.S. – EU partnership leads the world in exporting digitally-enabled services, which rely on data flowing freely across our borders.

“Once ratified by the EU, this new transatlantic data agreement will provide much-needed clarity and certainty for the transatlantic transfer of data, trade, and commerce. But here at home, our work is not done.

“For American businesses and consumers to enjoy absolute certainty about the use of their data, we need legislation that establishes a federal privacy standard — a national law that protects consumers’ data and privacy no matter where they live, while giving businesses certainty about their responsibilities. A federal privacy law, along with today’s newly-announced executive order, will provide unprecedented data protection for American consumers, businesses, and our partners.

“We applaud the Biden Administration for taking affirmative steps to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of American and European cross-border data flows and will continue to work with the Administration and members of Congress from both parties to pass a federal privacy bill.”

TechNet’s initiative, United for Privacy, has brought together partners across the economy to advocate for legislation that protects consumers and American businesses by calling for a national privacy law and ending the conflicting patchwork of state privacy laws. In 2020, TechNet provided comment to the European Data Protection Board on their proposed data transfer compliance regulations.
