Washington, D.C. – TechNet, the national, bipartisan network of innovation economy CEOs and senior executives, issued the following statement, attributable to TechNet President and CEO Linda Moore, ahead of tomorrow’s markup of the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA) in the House Energy and Commerce Committee:

“This is a unique moment for federal privacy legislation. Tomorrow’s markup is a significant milestone towards passing a much-needed federal privacy law and shows the great progress that has been made this year. Both parties are committed to action and willing to compromise, and we hope this momentum continues.

“However, while improvements to the ADPPA have been made throughout the process, the bill still needs further refinements to address several key issues before becoming law. The ADPPA still lacks the preemption provisions that are needed to create one, unified national standard that will protect consumers’ data and privacy no matter where they live while giving businesses certainty about their responsibilities. While we’re pleased the current bill includes provisions to prevent small businesses from incurring costly litigation expenses, concerns remain about those costs for innovators and other job creators across our economy.

“TechNet will continue to work with Congress to deliver a strong federal privacy law that protects consumers’ data, lessens the burdens for American small businesses, and spurs economic growth.”

TechNet has been a national leader in calling for federal privacy legislation. TechNet’s initiative, United for Privacy, has brought together partners across all sectors of the economy to advocate for legislation that protects consumers and American businesses by ending the patchwork of state privacy laws.
