Washington, D.C. – TechNet, the national, bipartisan network of innovation economy CEOs and senior executives, submitted comments on the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) proposed rulemaking regarding cybersecurity labeling for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, referred to as the Cyber Trust Mark program. The following statement can be attributed to TechNet President and CEO Linda Moore:
“Cyberattacks in the U.S. were up 57 percent last year. Each cybersecurity intrusion puts the integrity of financial markets, national security, and utility services at risk, threatens businesses, especially small ones, and violates civil liberties through personal data theft and stolen identity. As the value of data only increases, defending our critical infrastructure and protecting our data will require close collaboration between America’s technology sector and the government.
“While we share the FCC’s goal of increased cybersecurity protections for consumers, any potential Cyber Trust Mark program must be administered with clarity to ensure proposed regulations are unambiguous, provide participants with legal clarity regarding the potential liabilities or protections that may arise from their voluntary participation, and don’t unintentionally create cyber vulnerabilities or impose liability risks on participants.”
