Wednesday’s panels will discuss the urgent need for federal privacy legislation this Congress
Washington, D.C. – United for Privacy, a TechNet-led coalition of 27 key trade groups organizing for the passage of a federal data privacy law, will relaunch their campaign for the 118th Congress this Wednesday with an event on Capitol Hill featuring Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (D-WA) and leaders from various organizations, including multiple small business owners.
The series of panels will highlight the urgent need for a federal data privacy law, the progress toward legislative solutions, and what industry and legislative leaders are expecting ahead of a Congressional session that will be pivotal in advancing a law that ends the growing privacy patchwork and brings all 50 states under a uniform data privacy law.
The first panel, which will be moderated by TechNet President and CEO Linda Moore, will feature small business leaders in a discussion on how the privacy patchwork impacts small businesses’ ability to grow, invest in their business, and innovate. The second panel, which will be moderated by SIIA Head of Global Public Policy Paul Lekas, will feature leaders from across our economy discussing what’s needed in any federal data privacy legislation. The event will conclude with remarks by Congresswoman DelBene (D-WA).

Congressional inaction on data privacy legislation has brought about a patchwork of state privacy laws, which threatens America’s economy. A report by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation found that the patchwork will cost America over $1 trillion over a ten-year period, with $200 billion of those costs falling on America’s small businesses. Since 2018, 46 states have considered 182 different privacy laws, with 59 bills introduced across 27 states in 2023 alone. Thirteen states have passed comprehensive data privacy bills, including eight this year.
TechNet has been a national leader in calling for federal privacy legislation. TechNet’s initiative, United for Privacy, has brought together partners across all sectors of the economy to advocate for legislation that protects consumers and American businesses by ending the patchwork of state privacy laws.
